T-21
Trying to find one to measure. Believed to be built by Car Cruisers Ltd of Hayes on a Straussler trailer. Any help please on manufacturer or plans. Real examples are said to be at North Weald,Old Buckenham and a gliding club in Kent/Sussex. Brockhouse built the twin axle airfield caravan of which plans are available. Edited April 28, 2010 by T-

T-21
Les, Thank you for replying this is exactly the type I am trying to find out . Can you confirm where Whitfield is ? I am wondering if this is the old No.618 ATC Gliding School caravan from West Malling ? Any information on this type of caravan including manufacturers plate gratefully received. Goncalo Mendes
Hi, If possible, some photos, sides front/rear, the interior, detais... would be great too!!! That way, drawing a plan would be more accurate. Best regards, G_Mendes By the way, check this link: It shows a restored(recreated?) control caravan, two axle type. http://usaaf.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=270&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&hilit=control+caravan&start=10 Edited April 26, 2010 by Goncalo Mendes adding a link
Bodge Deep
New body on an original chassis. All the gear in it was mine (bar the elevated chair and the largest radio set) & thats me in it too!
Goncalo Mendes
Wow!!! Great workmanship!!! Could you share details about this rebuild? Photos, plans, drawings, history... A model of it, with interiour, would be a great adiction to a airfield diorama !!! Many thanks, G_Mendes
Bodge Deep
I haven't any details of the build I'm afraid as it was nothing to do with me, I just took up residence for the weekend with some of my gear for a display on the open day at 493rd Bomb Group at Debach. It is an excellent build though...
T-21
Many thanks to those who have replied. I have been on 12hr shifts hence the late reply. thanks to H Wade for the offer of measuring the Rougham caravan. I may try and get over there soon. These single axle caravans fascinate me as so little on their history is published and will soon be lost. I have written to the RAF Museum for any help and of course will report their findings here. Goncalo Mendes
From the rotabuggy jeep photo, assuming that the wheelbase is the same taht of the normal willys jeep, 80 inch., scaled from the photo above, gives a 188.5 inches to the caravan lenght. Assuming the distortion on the photo angle and depth, I consider 190 inches to be a credible dimension. Based on this I'm thinking do draw a plan of it, at least, exterior views, as I barely had seen any photos of the inside. If anyone can give a contribute, please do! There are some good photos around the net, it would be great if someone "centralized" them all in a post somewher! G_Mendes
antarmike
Bad picture but the Bikes and the guys standing in and around might be useful for scale???
Willyslancs
this pic any good for scale ?
Goncalo Mendes
Many thaks for the photos! Once we get an side dimension, is easier to scale hight from a good side view. I think to have a good one, somewhere... Best regards, G_Mendes

Jessie The Jeep
T-21, you can't link to images or files on your hard drive. You need to upload them to a host site such as Photobucket. Some of the files are PDF's, but I'm not sure if hosting sites like Photobucket can load PDF's. If your internet provider gives you free webspace, you could possibly upload them to there. Goncalo Mendes
A survivor! Fond this by accident, maybe someone has more information. A single axle example, still exists on a small airfield. http://tinworm-wings.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html http://tinworm-wings.blogspot.com/2009/10/red-check.html G_Mendes Edited November 9, 2021 by Goncalo Mendes
agwarrior
I'm reviving this old thread since I'm also very interested in building this type of runway control caravan in 1/48th scale. Does anyone have any news concerning the dimensions and photos of the Rougham example? I tried to contact T-21 but it's long time since he joined the forum. About the colors of the squares that was painted on these caravans,I think that the USAF was using black-white and the RAF red-white.Any other opinions or more solid info? Thank you, Constantinos
